Thousands of girls and women face sanitary challenges every month in refugee camps throughout Sudan due to lack of access to female hygienic pads. Please donate so we can purchase them and distribute them to those girls.
Sanitary Pad Project
Imagine you are a female student in high school, in an area stricken by poverty and malnutrition, a refugee camp in Sudan, lacking basic hygienic products, and you want to excel in school because it is your only ticket to the future. Just imagine. Alas! Reality is painful in this part of the world. You are forced to stay home four to six days every month because you cannot afford sanitary pads for your menstrual period. Imagine the frustration, the sadness, and the shame you feel every month in that part of the world. You are forced to improvise with unhygienic alternatives. These alternatives put you at a higher risk for infectious diseases and missing more school days as a result.
Thousands of girls and women go through this challenge every month in these refugee camps due to lack of access to female hygienic pads. Imagine if one of those girls happened to be your daughter, your sister, your cousin, your niece or even your friend.
Having access to sanitary pads is not luxury for these girls (or even women for that matter)- it is a basic human right, the right for basic means to cleanliness, for health, for education and above all, the preservation of human dignity.
The EMC (Eritrean Muslim Council) Women’s Group in North America has launched a new project named “Project Sanitary Pads” in November 2015 to help these girls in the Shegerab High School in Sudan for at least the next 12 months as a starting point. Members of this non-for profit organization are ordinary Eritrean Muslim women who live in Canada and the USA who look out for ways to help underprivileged girls in different communities in Sudan and elsewhere where there is lack of resources and means for a dignified way of life. They have been in existence for about 10 years. They have unanimously decided to fund this Project through donations received from individuals and businesses across USA and Canada.
Please donate to Project Sanitary Pads, to buy those girls who are hungry for education much needed pads from local markets in Sudan, to enable them to return back to the classroom dignified and feeling healthy.
Until a sustainable solution is found and developed, we intend to help these girls attend school for as long as possible, to restore their dignity and self-esteem, to feel no shame or embarrassment and continue to function in their daily activities.
We have a total of 150 girls. With all expenses of purchasing and delivery to them in their school, it will cost a total of $18 per student per year. For all of 2016, we will require a total of $2,700 at a minimum.
Please donate for a healthy and sanitary life.
May God bless you.
