Menstrual Hygiene Products for Girls in the Horn

We are Students for the Horn of Africa, a student group at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities raising funds for girls and women in the Horn to receive feminine hygiene products. This is something that is taken for granted in many parts of the developed world, but thousands of women lack access to sanitary products. In the horn, young women use unhygienic unsafe means as a measure of coping with menstruation. These methods have resulted in using cloths or rags, and even twigs, mud, or other stuffings, which can cause infections and diseases. Reproductive and sexual health is uncommon in the horn, which has amplified the stigma and shame that young women feel. Many girls are even limited from receiving their education due to the lack of sanitary pads and other products.

Girls and women in the Horn need to be granted resources for their needs, and should never have to resort to detrimental tactics to cope. As sanitary products increase, girls can learn more about what is healthy while keeping up with their education. They can also more likely to understand reproductive and sexual health early on, giving them guidance on different levels of health interventions that are needed in the future.
