Having worked with scores of schools throughout the Horn, ARAHA is keenly aware that a child’s success in school requires ongoing resources and support. In acknowledgment of this fact, ARAHA invites donors to sponsor a student for one year. A contribution of $20 per month towards a student sponsorship will cover class materials, a uniform, and school fees for one child in grades K-12, paving the way for a life of opportunity and a chance to rise out of poverty and achieve self-sufficiency.
We reiterate the importance of children going to school all the time. It’s a pathway out of poverty and a chance for students to improve their lives and those of their families. But we can’t neglect those who will educate those children.
Teachers play an essential role in the education and development of a child. They act not just as educators, but as mentors, role models, and guides. And yet in certain communities of the Horn, teachers are underpaid or subjected to payment at irregular intervals. With our teacher sponsorship program, donors can sponsor the salary of a teacher for only $200 per month, and in doing so ensure a stable existence for an educator and a quality education for many students.
When crisis strikes in Sudan, ARAHA mobilizes quickly to give families the support they need to come out strong after such times of upheaval. In a region too often affected by drought, famine, and armed conflict, the resources and services ARAHA provides vary greatly according to the circumstances. Sometimes this entails emergency food baskets, while other times it involves trucking in clean water supplies or providing temporary shelter. Whatever the situation, ARAHA works to sustain families through difficult periods, giving them the opportunity to devise viable resiliency plans for the future. Our general disaster relief fund ensures we are never caught off guard when disaster strikes and that we are able to respond immediately and efficiently wherever we are needed

To meet the challenges of tomorrow, the Horn of Africa needs bright and talented leaders who have had the opportunity to attend university and engage with ideas at the highest level. Economic circumstances, however, prevent many students from continuing their studies after high school. Donors can give promising students the opportunity to attend university with a monthly donation of only $100 – covering tuition, room, and board. A college sponsorship will not only impact the student, but the ripple effect for the communities these students and leaders hail from will be immeasurable.
The pathway to opportunity starts at school, and ARAHA is deeply committed to ensuring that every child in the Horn has access to education. Toward this end, ARAHA pursues a variety of different projects that focus on equipping students and schools for success according to community needs. Projects in ARAHA’s education program area include construction for schools and universities as well as ongoing support for students and teachers.
ARAHA’s programs are all guided by the goal of creating viable pathways to opportunity and economic independence for families in the Horn. Projects in the self-reliance program area specifically encourage and support the entrepreneurial thinking and community solutions of ARAHA beneficiaries by providing them with the tools they need to thrive. Funding for the general support of this program guarantees that we can keep it up and running in order to help as many people as possible find stability.
Self-reliance is, in many ways, a reflection of stability, and ARAHA’s self-reliance programs seek to cultivate that sense of stability and opportunity in even the most challenging circumstances. By constructing shelters for families who have been displaced, ARAHA brings the safety and dignity of a secure shelter to people in need of such measures of stability. Using local materials, these simple huts give families the chance to pursue opportunities despite their challenging circumstances. With only $700, you can provide a family shelter, and give them a place to rest and call home.
One of ARAHA’s longest running and most successful programs, the dairy goat program helps struggling families supplement their income and nutrition by providing a dairy goat. The milk they provide can be used to supplement daily nutritional needs or sold to generate income. When the goat reproduces, their offspring are given to other community members to create a ‘pay-it-forward’ system. For $100 you can start the atmosphere of paying it forward and give a goat to a family.
